How do I blur sensitive customer data when recording an SOP or tutorial?
Most workflow capture tools include a built-in redaction feature that lets you blur or block out sensitive information in screenshots after recording. In Glyde and Scribe, you can select any area of a screenshot and apply a blur or black box overlay. Always review every screenshot for visible customer names, account numbers, emails, and financial data before sharing the guide.
What sensitive data should you redact?
| Data Type | Where It Typically Appears | Redaction Method |
|---|---|---|
| Customer names | CRM contacts, support tickets, email headers | Blur over the name field |
| Email addresses | Contact details, inbox screenshots | Blur or black box |
| Account numbers | Billing dashboards, order details | Black box overlay |
| Financial data | Invoice amounts, payment details, pricing | Black box overlay |
| Phone numbers | Contact records, support tickets | Blur |
| Internal URLs | Browser address bar, internal tools | Crop or blur address bar |
| API keys/passwords | Settings pages, configuration screens | Never capture — pause recording |
How do you redact efficiently?
- During recording: Avoid navigating to pages with highly sensitive data (e.g., billing settings with full credit card numbers). If unavoidable, you can delete that step later.
- After recording: Review each screenshot in the guide editor. Apply blur or black box to any visible sensitive data.
- Use test data: When possible, perform the recorded workflow with test accounts or demo data to avoid real customer information entirely.
- Establish a review step: Before publishing any SOP, a second person reviews all screenshots for accidentally exposed data.
